Helfer was raised in rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada, to Dennis Elaine and Dennis Elaine Helfer. The family's ancestry includes German, English. Swedish, and Norwegian. She studied at the William E. Hay Composite High School of Stettler situated in Alberta. Alongside her sisters Trena Tammy Tara she resided in the grain farm of their family. At the age of 17, The agent from her modeling agency noticed her while in line waiting at the theater.
